Jesus didn’t call the Pharisees fools because they cared about God’s Law.
He called them fools because they forgot God Himself.
They knew Scripture.
They enforced rules.
They defended righteousness.
But in doing so, they missed God’s heart.
They turned faith into a system.
Obedience into a weapon.
And relationship into religion.
When Righteousness Loses Love
The Pharisees were serious about holiness—but they were careless with mercy.
Jesus reminded them, and He reminds us:
“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”
— Matthew 9:13
God’s desire was never legalism without love,
or justice without mercy,
or truth wielded without compassion.
When righteousness becomes detached from relationship,
it no longer reflects God—it misrepresents Him.
A Question for Us Today
So it’s worth asking ourselves an honest question:
Are we more passionate about the laws of the land
than the heart of Christ?
More focused on winning arguments
than winning souls?
More eager for punishment
than for repentance and restoration?
Jesus never called His followers to avenge wrongs, shame sinners, or act as the final judge.
What Belongs to God—and What Belongs to Us
Vengeance belongs to the Lord.
Judgment belongs to God.
“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
— Romans 12:19
Our calling is love.
Our posture is mercy.
Our witness is grace.
This isn’t about ignoring truth or excusing sin.
It’s about reflecting Jesus accurately.
Truth Must Look Like Christ
Truth without love hardens hearts.
But truth wrapped in grace leads people home.
God didn’t call us into a religion.
He called us into a relationship—
as children with our Father.
So before we quote laws,
point fingers,
or demand justice…
Let’s make sure we haven’t missed God’s heart.
This is Real Talk.
This is a warning worth hearing.
This is an invitation back to the heart of Christ.
