“The Two Owners”

There was once a town with two large factories that employed many people.

The first factory was owned by a man who loved power.
He believed the best workers were obedient workers.

He placed cameras everywhere.
He tracked every minute.
He punished mistakes harshly and publicly.

Workers were told:

“If you follow my rules exactly, you may keep your job.”

People worked out of fear.
They did what they were told, but they stopped caring.
Some stayed because they needed the paycheck.
Others stayed because they were afraid to leave.
The factory grew, but the people grew tired and broken.

The second factory was owned by another man.

He gave clear expectations, but he trusted his workers.
He taught them why their work mattered.
When mistakes happened, he corrected them privately and helped them grow.

He told them:

“You are free to stay, and you are free to leave.
I hope you choose to stay because you believe in the work.”

Some workers left.
Some failed and learned.
Some grew into leaders.

The factory didn’t grow as fast at first—but it grew strong.
People took pride in their work.
They protected the place not because they had to,
but because they wanted to.

Over time, people noticed something strange.

The first factory needed more guards, more rules, and more punishment to survive.
The second needed fewer rules, because the people carried the values themselves.

And the town began to understand:

One owner ruled by control.
The other ruled by invitation.

One demanded loyalty.
The other allowed choice.

And only one produced people who were truly free.

❓Reflection

  • Do I follow God because I am afraid—or because I trust Him?
  • Do I lead others through control—or through love?
  • When given freedom, what do I choose?
  • Which owner would you want to work for?

Father God,

You are not a ruler who forces,
but a Father who invites.

You do not stand over us with fear,
but walk beside us with patience and truth.

We confess that our hearts are often drawn to control—
to power that feels safe,
to certainty that removes risk,
to rules that make obedience easier than trust.

Forgive us for the times we have followed You out of fear
instead of love.
Forgive us for the times we have tried to control others
in Your name.

Teach us the way of Your kingdom—
a kingdom built not on force,
but on freedom.
Not on threats,
but on truth.
Not on fear,
but on love.

Help us to choose You freely,
not because we are afraid to leave,
but because we trust Your heart.

When we lead—
in our families, our churches, our workplaces, our communities—
teach us to lead as You do:
with humility, patience, and mercy.

Where fear has ruled our hearts, bring peace.
Where control has shaped our actions, bring repentance.
Where wounds have formed under false authority, bring healing.

We choose You today, not because we must,
but because You are good.

Lead us in freedom, Lord.
And help us become people who reflect that same freedom to others.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
