#WWJD — Becoming Like Jesus: Knowing His Heart and Character

,
An image with Jesus Christ and the words, "#WWJD, Becoming Like Jesus"

It’s possible to admire Jesus.

It’s possible to study Jesus.

It’s even possible to defend Jesus.

But becoming like Him?

That requires something deeper.

Because Jesus did not call us to copy His behavior mechanically.

He calls us to share His heart.

And you cannot reflect a heart you have never taken time to know.

Transformation Begins With Knowing Him

Christianity is not behavior modification.

It is heart transformation.

The more we see who Jesus truly is—His character, His compassion, His courage—the more our own hearts begin to shift.

You don’t become like Jesus by trying harder.

You become like Jesus by knowing Him more deeply.

The Heart of Jesus

When we look at the Gospels carefully, certain qualities appear again and again.

Compassion

Jesus was not emotionally distant.

He was moved.

He wept at Lazarus’ tomb.
He fed hungry crowds.
He noticed the overlooked.

He did not rush past suffering.

He entered it.

Humility

Though He claimed divine authority, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet.

He didn’t cling to status.

He didn’t demand recognition.

He lowered Himself.

True Christlikeness does not shout for attention.

It serves quietly.

Courage

Jesus was gentle with the broken—but fearless with corruption.

He confronted hypocrisy.
He overturned tables when exploitation dishonored God.
He stood silent before false accusations.

He was not passive.

He was anchored.

Patience

The disciples misunderstood Him repeatedly.

They argued about greatness.

They doubted.

They fled.

Yet He continued teaching, correcting, restoring.

Christlike patience is not weakness.

It is strength under control.

Truth Without Cruelty

Jesus never compromised truth.

But He also never weaponized it.

He told the woman at the well the truth about her life.

He exposed the Pharisees’ hypocrisy.

But He did not humiliate for sport.

Truth in His hands was redemptive—not performative.

How Do We Grow Into This?

If becoming like Jesus is about heart transformation, how does it happen?

1. Spend Time With Him

You cannot imitate someone you rarely study.

Read the Gospels slowly.

Watch how He responds:

  • To conflict
  • To injustice
  • To sinners
  • To power
  • To betrayal

Don’t just extract quotes.

Observe His posture.

2. Invite Conviction, Not Just Comfort

When we read Scripture, it should:

  • Encourage us
  • But also correct us

If we only see affirmation and never discomfort, we may be reading selectively.

Jesus shapes us when we allow His words to challenge our instincts.

3. Practice What You See

Christlikeness grows through obedience.

Not dramatic gestures.

But daily alignment.

Choosing:

  • Patience over reaction
  • Humility over pride
  • Mercy over revenge
  • Faith over fear

Small decisions form lasting character.

4. Depend on the Spirit

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would guide and transform His followers.

This is not self-powered imitation.

It is Spirit-enabled growth.

The fruit of the Spirit mirrors the character of Christ.

Love.
Joy.
Peace.
Patience.
Kindness.
Self-control.

These are not personality traits.

They are evidence of transformation.

The Warning

It is possible to defend Jesus publicly…
While misrepresenting Him personally.

It is possible to argue theology correctly…
While lacking His gentleness.

It is possible to quote Scripture…
While ignoring His heart.

Christlikeness is not loud religiosity.

It is quiet resemblance.

The Real Goal

The goal of this series is not information.

It is formation.

To be like Jesus, we must:

  • Know His identity
  • Understand His mission
  • Embrace His expectations
  • Study His heart

Because eventually, the question “What Would Jesus Do?” becomes less about guessing His behavior…

And more about reflecting His character.

What’s Next

Now that we’ve looked at His heart, we move to something practical:

How did Jesus respond in real-life situations?

Because watching how He treated people reveals everything about how we should respond today.

Next in the #WWJD Series:
How Jesus Responded to People and Situations

And this is where it becomes very personal.
